Guardian Security Guard Service Helps Spirit of Detroit Turn 50
At 16 feet tall and weighing 9 tons you would think that he would be capable of handling himself pretty well, but just to be on the safe side Guardian Security Guard Services has been providing uniformed security officers to protect the Spirit of Detroit statue this year.
Guardian Security Guard Services provides security officers for the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, which is also the home of the Spirit of Detroit statue. Located in Detroit at the corner of Woodward and Jefferson Avenues, the statue has become Detroit’s iconic symbol. The bronze statue was created by Marshall Fredricks in 1958. It depicts a seated figure holding a gilt bronze sphere with rays projecting out of it symbolizing God in the left hand, and a family in the right hand symbolizing all human relationships.
The passage of time and exposure to the elements have caused the statue had become discolored over the years. With the Spirit’s 50 year anniversary fast approaching the City of Detroit realized that a complete restoration would be required. Guardian Security Service was asked to protect the statue both during the restoration process and the 50 year anniversary celebration in the fall of 2008.
Guardian Security officers and their patrol vehicle soon became fixtures in downtown Detroit, standing by to protect this much loved symbol around the clock in all weather conditions. Their efforts paid off on September 23, 2008, when the refurbished statue was once again unveiled to the proud citizens of Detroit, looking as shiny and new as it had when first dedicated 50 years ago.
